CYCLEPATHS CHALLENGE 2019 RIDE REPORT

High Fives, Fist Bumps, and Huge Kudos are going out to Ride Directors Dana and Terry Hornady! We are looking forward to hearing great reviews from their survey after the super efforts they put out in keeping you up to date on their Rest Stops, routes, Sponsors, on-road support and so much more.

Directors, Dana & Terry Hornady

This year’s event honored the memory of young Joshua Johnson and raised funds for the children and families of Smile-a-Mile. Dad, Chris Johnson and friend Ray Stewart pedaled the 100 miles with love in the memory of Joshua.

Despite a gloomy forecast, nearly 200 cyclists rolled out with the 8:00 chiming of the Courthouse clock and smiling faces. Meanwhile, Rest Stop, ABCS, SAG, law enforcement, ham radio, and community volunteers set up to keep them safe and energized for their rides.  You can click on this photo to see some great on-road pics:

Thanks to the support of our ABCS Sponsors, promotion of the Series resulted in well over half of the cyclists opting for the century route.

Thank you Buffalo Rock!

We’re looking forward to recognizing a record number of Champions this year with 72 cyclists already having both century routes DONE so far. Check out our Cyclepaths Centurion Awards album – you can hover over a pic to see who is pictured:

It was an emotional day for all of us to send 2018 Champion Tim Franklin on his way toward adventure, but plan to see him at our May 19th Cheaha Challenge.

2018 CYCLEPATHS CHALLENGE RIDE REPORT

Our 2nd Series event enjoyed some great improvements including the new registration site at the Monroeville Chamber of Commerce, offering a comfortable setting for folks to sign up, pick up goodies, and appreciate the friendship of fellow cyclists.

Ride Day morning kicked off with pleasant temps although a bit damp, with no sign of the cold and windy conditions that were to develop as the day wore on. Ride Director, Dana Hornady did an awesome job with announcements and introductions, thanking riders for their support of Smile-a-Mile and this year’s memorial of Team Hudson.

She warned cyclists of recent ALDOT road work just begun a few days before and told of the many rest stops they would be able to take advantage of…9 in all for our centurions!

Dana asked Tim Benefield to speak a bit about the meaning the Ride of Love had for him and he certainly did a wonderful job of that, saying that he had pedaled the ride 7 times over the years and is going for his eighth this month.  And then, changing to a very happy subject, this happened and Gabby said YES!

She said YES!

Haley Bagget performed a beautiful rendition of our National Anthem and the cyclists were off!

As the day progressed, weather conditions took a nosedive but thankfully heavy rains kept their distance! Temps plummeted and winds made “feels like” temps feel almost brutal, but our tough riders hung in there and produced these happy, smiling faces. Thank you Marsha Burt for the great photos!

Nearly 100 Centurions signed in (listed to the right), with 61 cyclists already logging in with 2 centuries DONE and on their way to becoming 2018 CHAMPIONS!

2017 CYCLEPATHS CHALLENGE RIDE REPORT

Our first Series event kicked off the season in style with support from Monroeville Fire & Rescue, J.T. Johnston Ham Radio Club, and stellar community support at headquarters, on the road, and at rest stops!  The Challenge champions Smile-a-Mile in its efforts to provide support to families with children fighting cancer. Each rest stops reminds riders of how they are assisting in these endeavors. Smile-a-Mile’s Savannah Lanier DeRieux spoke to the group before ride start and thanked them for coming.

Chris Cole & Savannah

We were honored to be blessed in a pre-ride prayer by Tommy Gaillard who lost his daughter, Jamie to cancer several years back.  Tommy pedaled his century in memory of Jamie yesterday.

Congratulations to Ride Directors Dana & Terry Hornady as well as Planning Committee members Morgan Valvano, Dan Lieber, Jacky Hornady, James Allen Hornady (medic on course) and so many volunteers who made the day possible!  The lunch was superb as was the great layout of food during the day!

Photos are already being shared through our Facebook page and more will be added and also posted on Cyclepaths Challenge page of this site.  Here’s a starter slideshow of on-the-road photos by Marsha Burt:
